Traditional Herbal Medicine from Grandma for Young Children
Traditional Herbal Medicine from Grandma for Young Children
When our children were younger, we would seek out our parents or grandparents for help. These days, we see our doctors more frequently. The age-old practices passed down from moms to grandparents were never taught to our doctors, which is a real shame. Some of my favorite recipes that my grandma taught me are here, however this is by no means an exhaustive list.
Even though Grandma didn't use the term "ADD" when she was a kid, that's likely what it was. In addition to strict discipline, Grandma ensured that her children consumed a substantial amount of fish in order to enhance cognitive abilities and conduct. Fish was a terrific technique for her to increase our brain cell count, so she fed us fish. You may also prepare a spread by combining liquid flax seed oil with genuine butter; this will give your children the same vital fatty acids that are in fish. For breakfast, try it on some pancakes or waffles; for dinner, try it on some potatoes or vegetables.
To alleviate asthma, spread some lobelia oil or liquid onto your chest. You may even blend it with aloe vera or massage oil for an additional carrier.
No More Bed Wetting: "Those kids shouldn't have any sugary snacks before bed!" It was something Grandma would say without fail. Too much sugar, in her opinion, was the root cause of bed wetting. This may actually have some basis in reality and is related to increases in blood sugar, which I now know. If Grandma had a kidney infection, she would treat it with Goldenseal for a week.
For bites and stings, Grandma would use a paste made of aloe vera and black cohosh. As a rule, it alleviated the pain.
If we ever got chicken pox, Grandma would make us soak in a hot bath to hasten the outbreak and our recovery. Putting Pau D' Arco on your skin could alleviate pain and speed up the healing process.
The possibility of an allergy being the cause of colic was something Grandma was aware of. The mother should stay away from dairy, chocolate, onions, caffeine, garlic, broccoli, sugar, and cauliflower if she is nursing her child. It is recommended to change the baby's formula if she is not. Lavender flowers would be tied to the crib by Grandma. Applying a mixture of lavender essential oil and either massage oil or aloe vera diluted is a modern remedy for sore feet and belly. To put an end to the crying, just administer a few drops of catnip every several minutes.
For diaper rash, Grandma would apply yoghurt on the bottom of a baby's foot. These days, it's possible to give babies probiotics simply opening a capsule, adding a little water, and mixing well. If you mix it with aloe vera, you may also apply it on the bottom.
One further thing that could be caused by that awful milk is diarrhea. Verify that neither the infant nor the mother is consuming any milk from cows. In many cases, using goat's milk is sufficient to alleviate the problem. Red Raspberry is another option; just take a few drops every three to four hours.
If you're experiencing earaches, try dropping some tea tree oil or garlic oil into your ear.
Babies younger than three months old should see a doctor if they develop a fever (classified as a temperature higher than 101 degrees). However, fevers in infants older than three months can actually be helpful in fighting off infections. You should let a fever run its course unless it's close to 105 degrees or has been over 103 degrees for several hours. If a fever has occurred for any of the reasons listed above or if the kid is too uncomfortable to sleep, Grandma would always steep some chamomile and catnip in a tea to help bring it down.
The formula stuff wasn't good, Grandma knew; no one did it in her day; and whooping cough (and other coughs) were common. Whooping cough can be caused or worsened by milk and other dairy products. Several drops of blue vervain taken internally or lobelia rubbed to the chest would frequently be sufficient.
Growing up, I had no idea that Grandma was actually rather bright. If you give these natural health tips a go, maybe your kids and grandkids will look up to you in the future.
